Air Barriers

Air barriers are showing up in new construction and renovations, offering potential 10-40% cost savings by controlling condensation and eliminating the unwanted mixing of interior and exterior air.  An important part of sustainable design, they can take the form of a sheet membrane, field applied material, or spray-applied urethane foam. Many states now mandate them for all school work.

Training

Air barriers within or adjacent to masonry walls should be installed by trained masonry contractors. IMI trains in all types of air barriers and critical integration details like transition membranes, flashing, and anchors. IMI Air Barrier Familiarization classes for contractors, craftworkers and designers help make everyone comfortable. September sessions included BAC Local 1NY and New York City’s School Construction Authority, one of many school districts now requiring air barriers.
