TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Supervisor Certification Program

The Supervisor Certification Program (SCP) develops highly skilled, confident, and effective supervisors for the union masonry and tile industry. The program helps ensure forepersons and supervisors have the necessary skills to successfully run work on today’s job sites.

BENEFITS

FOR BUILDING OWNERS AND DESIGN PROFESSIONALS

  • Keep your project running smoothly with supervisors who’ve received extensive leadership training to help them effectively run work on time and on budget.
  • Promote a culture of workplace safety with supervisors versed in safety leadership, and who have OSHA 30 and CPR/First Aid certifications.
  • See your project drawings and designs come to life with the support of supervisors who have formal training in blueprint reading.

FOR BAC CRAFTWORKERS AND CONTRACTORS

  • Craftworkers: advance your career with a credential that proves you have the skills and ability to run work and lead on job sites as a foreperson or superintendent. You’ll learn how to be a safety leader, how to inspire your crew, how to interpret blueprints, and more.
  • Contractors: Keep your business competitive and strengthen your reputation with job site supervisors that are trained to safely and effectively manage a crew while keeping your projects on time and on budget.

CURRICULUM AND CORE MODULES

To obtain SCP, craftworkers complete a wide range of coursework to prepare them for every aspect of assuming a leadership role on construction job sites. The program combines lecture with interactive, real-world exercises that reflect the realities of managing complex projects.

The foreperson training program covers:

  • The roles and responsibilities of forepersons and supervision on the job site.
  • Interpersonal skills, including communication, leadership, team building, and motivation.
  • Labor-management relations, collective bargaining agreements, harassment and discrimination, and more.
  • Planning and scheduling work, including problem solving, documentation, and record keeping.
  • Productivity, including project tempo and financial considerations.
  • Quality control, including standards and specifications, inspections, and feedback.

The Foundations for Safety Leadership program teaches critical leadership skills supervisors can use on the job site to more effectively communicate and work with their crew members to create a stronger jobsite safety climate. The interactive course covers the benefits of effective safety leadership and the costs of ineffective safety leaderships.

The blueprint class covers critical information to successfully interpret project drawings, including:

  • Reading lines and symbols on drawings
  • Views
  • Drawing information
  • Reading drawings
  • Blueprint reading technology

Six Steps to Mentoring, a part of the Mentorship Matters program, is designed to improve communication and skill transfer on the job site between apprentices and journeyworkers, including supervisors.

The class offers a framework for mentoring by outlining 6 steps that can be applied to any teaching scenario: identifying the point of the lesson, linking the lesson, demonstrating the skill, providing opportunity for the mentee to practice, giving feedback, and assessing progress.

The OSHA-30-hour training course is specifically devised for safety directors, forepersons, and field supervisors with responsibility for worksite health and safety. Emphasis is placed on hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention along with complete information on OSHA compliance.

The CPR and First Aid training equips non-medical professionals to respond to a wide variety of common conditions to help keep patients in stable condition in first-response situations. Modules covered include wounds, heart, fractures, burns, poisoning, hemorrhages, choking, shock, and other injuries.
